i3 is seeking a Metrology Technician to support The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives (ATF) Fire Research Laboratory (FRL) located in Beltsville, MD. The ATF – FRL, completed in 2003, is the world’s largest research laboratory that is dedicated to fire scene investigations. FRL scientists utilize its unique structure and sophisticated instrumentation to investigate fire scene phenomena; conduct forensic fire science and engineering tests; and analyze fire growth and dynamics questions.

The FRL conducts investigations that involve fire scene reconstruction; flashover studies; electrical fire cause evaluation; and validation of fire pattern analysis indicators. It also participates in important investigations regarding the impact of accelerants on fire growth and spread, ignition studies and electrical fire cause analysis.

    • Utilize calibration methods and techniques based on principles of measurement science, technical analysis of measurement problems, and accuracy and precision requirements.
    • Identifies magnitude of error sources contributing to uncertainty of results to determine reliability of measurement process in quantitative terms, diagnoses and repairs malfunction in complex measuring and test equipment using theories of operation, block diagrams, schematics, logic trees, and software diagnostics to the component level.
    • Provides training to apprentice technicians on metrology principle, resolving technical problems, and complicated electronic theory.
    • Inspect measuring and test equipment for preventive maintenance, cleanliness, and safety requirements, analyze and interpret results of measurements and calibrations using mathematical formulas, and document results of measurements and calibrations on calibration certificates and calibration correction charts.
    • Maintenance, Repair and Calibration of Measurement.
Installation, calibration, repair and replacement of portable measurement equipment and instrumentation installed in the measurement hoods in each test cell as directed by FRL.

    • The instrumentation consists of ductwork assemblies equipped with gas sampling probes (analyzer) to record carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2) concentrations. These analyzers are used to measure gas concentrations generated from fire tests.
    • This may also include equipment such as thermocouple welder and heat flux transducers as required.
    • Routine maintenance may include replacing components of the gas analyzers and heat flux transducers when the equipment fails to produce accurate readings.
