Overview

i3 is seeking a mid-level Structural Engineer to perform structural analysis using standard calculations and simulation tools such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to provide quantitative feedback to program management and design teams. 

Responsibilities

The selected candidate will work closely with design engineers to evolve mechanical systems from basic concepts to feasible structural solutions to customer requirements, support ground test development and correlation efforts. Build complex assembly models incorporating boundary conditions from test data or Multi-physics simulations, isotropic and anisotropic materials, and nonlinear contact behavior while adhering to aggressive delivery schedules. Ideal candidate should have some systems engineering knowledge and be able to work other engineering and non-engineering problems as assigned including test planning, test data reduction, thermal-structural FEA analysis, systems analysis, technical writing skills, customer interface skills, presentation skills, and requirements analysis and verification.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s Degree preferred in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an ABET accredited program. Additional years of experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in structural analysis of aerospace vehicles, ground launch systems, hypersonics, or similar technology.
  • Working knowledge of metallic materials for structural applications required.
  • Understanding of the analysis of large assemblies including contact effects and nonlinear material behavior.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and adhere to schedules.

Desired Skills:

  • A solid understanding of mechanical engineering principals and experience with the use of finite element analysis codes such as ABAQUS to support nonlinear implicit and explicit analysis of missile systems, air vehicles, and ground support equipment.
  • Ability to perform sensitivity and ‘what-if’ analysis to support design development decisions.
  • Specific experience in the use of ABAQUS CAE, ANSYS Workbench, Siemens FeMAP or Altair HyperMesh.
  • Some systems engineering experience (requirements analysis and verification).
  • Technical writing skills, customer-interfacing skills, and the ability to present complex engineering results to a diverse audience.

Security Clearance:

  • Active Security clearance preferred. Must be able to obtain and maintain the level of clearance required for this position.
