Overview

i3 is seeking a Safety Engineer to support the ULC Product Office. This position will provide system safety, risk management, and technical engineering support across the ULC portfolio, with a focus on planning, coordinating, and executing comprehensive system safety activities for ULC products.


The Safety Engineer will support system safety efforts across development, testing, qualification, acquisition, fielding, product improvement, and sustainment activities. The candidate will perform risk management tasks, risk analyses, hazard identification and classification, hazard tracking, and evaluation of mitigation and corrective actions as part of the overall engineering effort.


This role includes serving as a principal consultant, advisor, and technical authority on safety-related matters. The candidate will ensure system safety is considered throughout the acquisition life cycle and will support system configuration activities associated with development, production, modification, and fielding programs.
The Safety Engineer will support compliance with applicable safety regulations and standards, including MIL-STD-882, AR 385-10, AMCOM 385-17, SAE ARP 4754/4761, RTCA DO-178, DO-278, DO-254, DO-330, and other applicable government and industry standards.


This role requires coordination with government offices, defense agencies, PMO staff, matrix support personnel, contractors, and industry partners to gather the support required to meet system safety requirements, goals, and objectives. The candidate will assess safety program status, budgets, costs, schedules, and accomplishments, and will recommend or direct actions necessary to address deficiencies and improve program execution.


The successful candidate will demonstrate strong engineering judgment, technical problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams. The candidate should be able to evaluate contractor safety products, plans, and processes for technical competence, completeness, and accuracy, and provide recommended changes to documentation based on those evaluations.

Responsibilities

  • Support system safety, risk management, and technical engineering activities within the ULC Product Office.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute a comprehensive system safety program for ULC products.
  • Perform risk management tasks, risk analyses, hazard identification and classification, and hazard tracking.
  • Evaluate mitigation and corrective actions to determine their effectiveness in maintaining a safe system or platform.
  • Serve as a principal consultant, advisor, and technical authority on safety-related matters.
  • Ensure system safety is considered throughout development, testing, qualification, acquisition, fielding, product improvement, and sustainment activities.
  • Support system configuration activities associated with development, production, modification, and fielding programs.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable system safety regulations, requirements, and industry standards.
  • Provide government interface support between industry, defense agencies, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Meet with PMO staff, matrix support personnel, and contractor personnel to determine safety program status, budgets, costs, schedules, and accomplishments.
  • Identify deficiencies in safety programs and recommend or support corrective actions to improve program execution.
  • Evaluate contractor system safety products, plans, and processes for technical competence, completeness, and accuracy.
  • Provide recommended changes to contractor documentation based on technical evaluations.
  • Perform research, analysis, and staff coordination in support of risk documentation.
  • Prepare System Safety Risk Assessments, Risk Determinations, and related risk documentation in accordance with applicable Army requirements.
  • Prepare, update, review, or assist with system safety analyses, including hardware and software safety analyses.
  • Support development and review of Functional Hazard Analyses, Fault Tree Analyses, System Safety Program Plans, System Safety Management Plans, and System Safety Assessment Reports.
  • Prepare, review, or provide input to software safety technical data packages in support of Army materiel release efforts.
  • Develop, review, or evaluate safety requirements for incorporation into new and existing system development or improvement efforts.
  • Work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic government program office environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least five (5) years of relevant safety engineering, systems engineering, aviation, defense, or acquisition-related experience.
  • Experience supporting system safety, risk management, hazard analysis, or safety assessment activities.
  • Experience with risk management tasks, risk analyses, hazard identification, hazard classification, and hazard tracking.
  • Ability to evaluate mitigation and corrective actions for safety effectiveness.
  • Understanding of system safety activities across the acquisition life cycle.
  • Ability to support development, testing, qualification, acquisition, fielding, product improvement, or sustainment activities.
  • Ability to evaluate contractor safety products, plans, processes, and documentation.
  • Ability to prepare, review, or support technical and risk documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and task management skills.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting unmanned aircraft systems, uncrewed aviation platforms, or aviation-related programs.
  • Experience supporting a Program Management Office or Product Office environment.
  • Experience supporting Department of War or Army acquisition programs.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-882, AR 385-10, AMCOM 385-17, or related system safety requirements.
  • Experience with SAE ARP 4754/4761, RTCA DO-178, DO-278, DO-254, DO-330, or related industry standards.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing System Safety Risk Assessments, Risk Determinations, or related risk acceptance documentation.
  • Experience developing or reviewing Functional Hazard Analyses, Fault Tree Analyses, System Safety Program Plans, System Safety Management Plans, or System Safety Assessment Reports.
  • Experience supporting hardware or software safety analysis.
  • Experience supporting Army materiel release or technical data package development.
  • Experience coordinating safety activities with government organizations, defense agencies, contractors, or external stakeholders.
  • Experience monitoring cost, schedule, and performance for technical or safety-related efforts.
  • Experience preparing and presenting technical or programmatic briefings to leadership.

  • Regular i3 hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, however, additional hours may be required on occasion. Regular and punctual attendance is required.
